Velocity Made Good
The equivalent of planning for performance, velocity made good (VMG) is a sailing calculation that factors in apparent wind, direction and destination to determine the optimum course or point of sail. The objective is to achieve maximum velocity “made good” - towards a specific mark - not maximum boat speed or minimum course distance.
